Students learn communicative skills through role plays, games and group discussions on everyday topics with support from written texts. In writing classes, students write narrative, descriptive and comparative paragraphs. At the higher levels of the programme, the English Language skills taught prepare students for academic purposes. By the end of the programme, students are expected to critically analyse information, deliver academic presentations, and make cogent arguments. The IEP consists of 4 levels: Elementary, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced. The course consists of 20 contact hours per week.
A Placement Test is administered to registered students of Curtin Sarawak to determine their command of English. Based on the test scores, students are placed at the appropriate IEP level. There are three intakes/terms a year. Each term comprises of 10 teaching weeks. Ongoing assessments and end of term examinations are conducted to determine students' progress to higher levels of the programme. Upon completion of each level, certificates of completion and examination transcripts are awarded to students.
