Curtin University Sarawak Campus - The Learning Centre
The Learning Centre provides academic support for Curtin Sarawak students and also carries out English Language classes through the Intensive English Programme and the English Language Bridging Programme.

    Academic Support

The academic support through the forms of modules are provided free of charge to Curtin Sarawak students.  The modules are aimed at developing the academic skills of students while they continue studying in their enrolled program.
The modules are scheduled at various times throughout the year, some more frequently than others, according to students' needs. Some of the modules that we currently offer includes Plagiarism &Referencing Skills, Paraphrasing, Vocabulary Skills, Understanding Emotional Intelligence, Learning Styles, Presentation / Public Speaking Skills, Time Management, Report Writing, Writing Lab Reports, Critical Thinking & Reading Skills, Note Taking,  Stress Management, Mind Mapping, Crystal Clear Communication, Writing Good Sentences in English, Designing Good Questionnaires and Good English Punctuation.

    Intensive English Programme

The Intensive English Programme (IEP) is designed specially to improve general English language proficiency and it specifically caters for potential tertiary education students who lack the English language entry requirements to do so.
At the lower levels, teaching materials and classroom activities allow students to practice listening and reading comprehension. Students learn communicative skills through role plays, games and group discussions on everyday topics with support from written texts. In writing classes, students write narrative, descriptive and comparative paragraphs. At the higher levels of the programme, the English Language skills taught prepare students for academic purposes. By the end of the programme, students are expected to critically analyse information, deliver academic presentations, and make cogent arguments. The IEP consists of 4 levels: Elementary, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced.  The course consists of 20 contact hours per week.

A Placement Test is administered to registered students of Curtin Sarawak to determine their command of English. Based on the test scores, students are placed at the appropriate IEP level.
There are three intakes/terms a year. Each term comprises of 10 teaching weeks. Ongoing assessments and end of term examinations are conducted to determine students' progress to higher levels of the programme. Upon completion of each level, certificates of completion and examination transcripts are awarded to students. All students at the Advanced level will take the Curtin University Test of English, CUTE.  The results will demonstrate whether they meet the English competency required for entry into the Foundation and Degree programmes run by Curtin University. Materials used in the classroom are continually assessed and modified to ensure quality learning. The university provides high-quality teaching facilities and resources including classroom computers, overhead projectors and audio-visual devices. The teaching staff is a team of dynamic, highly-experienced, well-qualified and dedicated teachers who adopt diverse approaches and techniques in the teaching of English as a second language.

    The English Language Bridging Program

The English Language (EL) Bridging Program is an advanced English Program.  Completion of this program will allow students to fulfill the English entry requirements for undergraduate and postgraduate study at Curtin University.  Students will need to obtain a minimum band of ‘D’ to be eligible for entry into this English Language Bridging Programme.
There are two intakes a year for this semester long programme.   English Language Bridging offers advanced units in Academic Writing, English Communication, Tertiary Study Skills and English for Specific Purposes. Three out of four of the units have continuous assessments and final examination.   A minimum score of 50% in all units is required for entry into the degree programme.  A higher score is required for entry into some of the post-graduate courses, Master of Accounting and Finance courses - a pass in all four units with a 60% minimum mark and MBA - a pass in all units with a 65% minimum mark.
